As time goes by

I've used this picture before, so if you don't know who these people are, you'll have to dig back in the archives and find out. They went out on their first date on May 1, got engaged on May 10, and married on August 8, all in the summer of 1970. The Dayton's bridal folk stuck their snooty noses into the air and tsk-tsked that there was NO WAY that a dress could be ready between mid-May and early August, which was exactly why Home Ec teacher and seamstress extraordinaire Rita Bezdicek came along to look at dresses.

The biology professor/wedding photographer was more comfortable taking shots of insects and other small critters in nature than of humans, so this is one of the few non-black and white pictures taken that day. Flute and guitar music played by a group of hippies (back then--now they're an Irish folk group) and a piano prelude by the high school music teacher rounded out the "here's who's available on short notice" musicians. The St. Ignatius Catholic Church congregation had just completed the new church, and since the church basement/hall was still under construction, a reception at the local country club, where a local taxidermist displayed his wares on the walls, was the venue for cake, mints, nuts, and dainty little sandwiches.

Somehow, forty years have gone by since that typically hot, humid, and hazy August Saturday in 1970. There were only two of us then. 

Now there are twelve, with two more showing up soon. We couldn't imagine it in 1970, and we can't imagine it any other way in 2010!
