Anniversary, Cousins part 7 (finale)

Thanks to everyone for the sweet anniversary celebration last week. Yes, we've been married a long, long, long time. 45 years, to be exact. When my grandparents had been married for 45 years, I thought they were ancient--much as our grandchildren think we are now. When the kiddos make comments like, "You're old!", I want them to know that if I weren't as old as I am, they wouldn't be as old as they are. Okay, that doesn't seem all that philosophical when I write it here, but think about it.

We were presented with a one-layer replica of our wedding cake. On the morning of our wedding all those years ago, my mom had gone out to the country club where the reception was held to make sure the cake was delivered. She came back home looking a bit concerned. I don't remember that she actually asked me to sit down, but she did say she had something to tell me about the cake, and she was worried I'd be upset. Naturally, I pictured a smashed cake with footprints in it. It surely had been dropped on the way from the car to the reception room. Or maybe it had slid around in the car on the way, and looked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The horrific thing that had taken place was that the frosting, which was supposed to be white (shocking color for a wedding cake), was actually pale yellow. It was made with butter, and had been tinted ever so slightly by the butter color. Since the cake itself was lemon (and I had to beg the baker to make a lemon cake), why would I be upset about the frosting being pale yellow? I wasn't upset, my mother breathed a sigh of relief, and the day was saved.

Here's the wedding cake facsimile, which was a fun surprise.

Okay, so Homer and Marge Simpson were subbed in for the standard bride and groom cake topper, but otherwise, pretty close! An ironic historical note  from 45 or so years ago: I worked for a woman named Marge Simpson when I was in high school. She and husband Roger owned the local A&W. She didn't have blue hair, but the rest of her resembled cartoon Marge. And, I dated a guy with the last name of Simpson (no, not Bart, and no relation to the A&W Simpsons) until Gpappy/Dad/Larry and I met. It's a small world after all.

Thanks again to Elisabeth, Evan, Charlie, Angie, Annie, Tanner, and the short people for the cute cake. It still cracks me up that Ethan was disappointed that there were cupcakes (chocolate, with lots of frosting and sprinkles) for the cousins instead of cake. However, Ethan and several of the kids managed to get a little piece of the anniversary cake, too. We couldn't bear their disappointment!
