We had the great experience of riding the AVE (Alta Velocidad España) high speed train from Barcelona to Madrid, moving along at up to 280 km/hr. The ride was incredibly smooth and quiet, and the countryside flew by. This particular trip featured a Mongolian movie (Wolf Totem) with Spanish subtitles.
Unfortunately, I don't have any significant pictures from Madrid, because that is the point in our trip that Larry was ill. Here's what I do have...
Looking out a window from our hotel in the city center.
Walking along the streets near the hotel the first evening in Madrid, on our way to dinner.
Streets were moderately crowded that evening. In the next few days, the sidewalks filled to capacity to celebrate Constitution Day. Apparently los madrileños leave the city, but everyone else flocks into Madrid for this extended holiday.
Dinner at Petit Comité.
Insert urgent care and hospital visits here for Larry/Dad/Gpappy. After that, everything was a blur as Road Scholar people in the U.S. found us tickets on a British Airways flight out of Madrid for Friday morning. Then, as they say, the fun began. More on that in a final blog entry, maybe tomorrow.
